What do I do?
I am a sculptor predominantly working in stone and metal but I also paint and draw - keeping my practice informed and varied. When working with stone I tend to make figurative pieces, human or animal and I tend to let the stone lead the way - drawing the inspiration from the particular lump of rock and in a sense releasing the image from within it. I am able to see a shape in the stone and carve it out, planning where to put what and how to organise limbs and position the head. This process is slow and laborious and tiring not only for the arms but mentally as well. I am continuously having to make decisions about how deep to cut and I try not to stress and worry too much about pieces of stone breaking off unintentionally.
When working with metal, I have a very different, more deliberate and focused approach allowing myself to get more ambitious in terms of size and also to develop more ambitious ideas and abstract sculpture. Steel is a forgiving and self supporting material that can be used quite crudely to produce a more rugged look to a sculpture or it can be used with fine detail. I try to use both looks in my work as well as utilising a lot of reclaimed and recycled materials.
For the most part of my career I have been happily working to commissions as well as working steadily to complete a body of work to show. Feel free to approach me to discuss ideas about specific projects you would like realised. Send me an email: art@zeljko.co.uk or fill in an online form.
